The Action Sports Retailer (ASR) trade show, a major event in the action sports industry, started in 1981 and ran annually every January and August in San Diego. The show, which brought together key brands, retailers, and industry professionals, officially ended after the January 2011 event. ASR was known for its business dealings and vibrant, party-like atmosphere, especially in the skateboarding community. However, due to changing market dynamics, including brand competition, consolidation among retailers, and challenging economic conditions, ASR ceased operations. Andy Tompkins, the Nielsen Group Show Director and VP of ASR, announced the cancellation, citing difficulties in meeting the evolving needs of the market. ASR's closure led to the rise of new events like the Agenda show and The Gathering, a skateboard-focused trade event, which helped maintain the connections that ASR once fostered within the industry.
