Jovontae Turner grew up in San Francisco during the growth of modern street skateboarding and became a regular at Embarcadero Plaza. Skaters including Tommy Guerrero and Jim Thiebaud influenced his skating from an early age. Turner gained early exposure in Powell Peralta's "Ban This" video alongside Salman Agah after being noticed by Stacy Peralta and Steve Caballero. Soon after, Jason Lee and Mark Gonzales brought him onto Blind Skateboards. Turner later rode for Planet Earth, World Industries, and the original Girl Skateboards team with Eric Koston, Guy Mariano, and Sean Sheffey. He appeared in videos including "Now N Later" and "Love Child", and later launched the clothing brand Jovontae Turner and Co.
