Mike Carroll, born in San Francisco and raised in Daly City, California, began skating as a child, inspired by his cousin and brother, and quickly became immersed in the San Francisco scene. By age 11, he was skating at iconic spots like Embarcadero and connecting with influential skaters from the EMB crew.
Carroll’s early sponsors included Concrete Jungle and Naked Boards, but his career gained traction with H-Street, where he appeared in "Shackle Me Not". His breakout came with Plan B’s "Questionable" in 1992, followed by "Virtual Reality". These parts showcased his technical skill and laid-back style.
In 1993, Carroll co-founded Girl Skateboards with Rick Howard, and later Chocolate Skateboards. He also helped launch Lakai Limited Footwear, contributing to its acclaimed video "Fully Flared". Carroll appeared in several landmark skate videos, including "Goldfish", "Yeah Right!", and his opening line in TransWorld's 2000 video "Modus Operandi" is considered by many to be one of the greatest lines ever recorded.
He was featured on the first 'Slap Magazine' cover in 1992, named Thrasher’s Skater of the Year in 1994, and ranked 16th on TransWorld’s Most Influential Skaters list. In 2023, Carroll was inducted into the Skateboarding Hall of Fame for his lasting contributions to skateboarding.
