Location: Embarcadero Plaza, Market St &, Steuart St, San Francisco, CA 94105, USA Landmarks: Vaillancourt Fountain (aka "Québec libre!") __________ Embarcadero, officially known as Justin Herman Plaza, was a legendary skateboarding spot in San Francisco that rose to prominence between 1989 and 1993. Designed in the early 1970s and modified in 1982, its layout of bricks, ledges, steps, and unique architectural features became a foundation for modern street skating. Located near the Ferry Building, it quickly became a global destination for skaters seeking to push boundaries. The spot gained fame thanks to influential skaters like Mike Carroll, Jovontae Turner, Henry Sanchez, Karl Watson, Lavar McBride, and James Kelch, who was often called the “mayor” of Embarcadero. Their technical innovation helped shift skateboarding’s focus from vert and freestyle to street. Mark Gonzales also made history there by ollieing the infamous “Gonz Gap” in 1986 and kickflipping it in 1993. Embarcadero wasn’t just a skate spot — it was a scene. The EMB crew (Embarco’s Most Blunted) fiercely protected their turf, and the plaza became a proving ground for anyone hoping to earn local respect. Despite police crackdowns and a 1996 shutdown driven by business complaints, Embarcadero’s influence remains foundational. Its legacy continues to inspire street skating worldwide, marking it as a cultural landmark in skateboarding history.
