The Southbank Undercroft beneath the Queen Elizabeth Hall is widely regarded as the birthplace of British skateboarding. Adopted by skaters in the early 1970s, it has been used continuously for decades by skateboarders, BMX riders and graffiti artists. Threatened by redevelopment in 2013 and 2014, the space was protected through the Long Live Southbank campaign. Today the concrete plaza remains lit, covered and open, featuring blocks, banks, stairs and rails, with global cultural importance today.
